The Status of Participation and the Future Expectation of General Dentists for Orthodontic Treatment

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to research dentists¡¯s current participation level in orthodontic treatment and their opinion of desirable goal of college education for clinical practice in orthodontics. We used an online survey methodology. In Dentphoto (http://www.dentphoto.com/) that is an online community of dentists, we surveyed 4,000 dentist members. 56% of the respondents answered that their current participating level in orthodontic treatment is ¡®orthodontic treatment consultation and referring¡¯. 37.08% of the respondents answered that ¡®can roughly diagnose malocclusion and consult or refer¡¯ is desirable goal of the college education for clinical practice in orthodontics. Respondents who reported that they were involved in orthodontic treatment at a higher level, other than ¡®orthodontic treatment consultation and referring¡¯ had a tendency to increase with age and clinical career. The older and the more clinical experience, the more respondents answered that the desirable goal of college education for clinical practice in orthodontics is higher level. The higher participating level in orthodontic treatment, the more respondents answered that the desirable goal of college education for clinical practice in orthodontics might be able to improve the overall occlusal relationship by applying a fixed orthodontic appliance and wires to entire arch. we need to undrestand changes in participating level in orthodontic treatment accompany changed opinions about desirable educational goal in orthodontic clinical practice.
